Summary: This research aimed to investigate if personality traits affect student persistence behavior in higher education in the distance modality. In order to reach the objective the Metateoric Model of Motivation and Personality (3M Model), presented by Mowen (2000) was used. Data collection was performed through a survey that used a structured questionnaire that was answered by 260 undergraduate students in the distance modality. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyze the data using the statistical method of Multiple Linear Regression. The results showed that the 3M Model’s is suitable to the investigated context and that the personality traits analyzed in a hierarchical way, from the most basic trait to the more concrete trait, contributing to explain the behavior of Student Persistence. Among the investigated situational traits, Satisfaction was the most important trait that of impacted Student Persistence. The results of the research contributed to the formulation of student assistance policies that aim to promote the persistence and reduction of student evasion in distance learning courses. These actions should be performed mainly considering the Satisfaction. Among the proposed actions are: the application of a satisfaction survey to students of distance courses; the accomplishment of a work of accompaniment of students with the objective to understand what are the reasons of the abandonment of the course, and; the incentive of the student's participation at a distance in the psychological support actions offered by PROAECI. The present research is aligned with the Master's research line, Operations Management in the Public Sector, because it aims understand the profile of the student linked to SEAD/UFES, through the 3M Model ́s, and through the elaboration of proposals of policies of student assistance aims to contribute to the promotion of persistence and reduction of evasionin the University.
