Summary: As an Introduction, it can be said that Brazilian Federal Universities meet the standards of the Ministry of Education (MEC) and, therefore, of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), which has, among other responsibilities, to promote the dissemination and access to the scientific production of the strictosensu graduate programs that it evaluates and coordinates. Contextualizing, it has to be said that, due to the courses authorized by it and in operation, the creation of the Portal of Periodicals of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), which, in a virtual environment, makes available to the society the electronic periodicals produced in any instance and place of UFES, notably those from the academic environment and research centers. The problem is that the index page of the UFES Journal Portal presented, until the month of September 2019, some problems related to graphic design, which ends up offering obstacles to navigation experiences and the search for information. The main objective was to analyze the index page of the UFES Journal Portal under the bias of Graphic Design in order to propose a manual of verb-visual rules for its use. In theoretical terms the research resorted to studies of Visual Culture and Graphic Design - Visual Communication. As for the methods and procedures, a mix-type, qualitative and quantitative research was used, in which a bibliographic review, documentary survey and questionnaire were applied as a way of collecting quantitative data. Data collection was carried out through screen captures from the UFES Journal Portal and through the application of a structured questionnaire to collect quantitative data. Screenshots have gone through content analysis. The questionnaires were tabulated and analyzed the percentages obtained. The results showed that the absence of items such as visual hierarchy, rules for archiving inactive journals, standardization of image dimensions and number of characters for each presentation's verbal presentation impose a profusion of information presented in a visually monotonous arrangement on the portal visitor. , giving undue highlights to certain journals (either due to their position in the list of publications, or due to the excessive size of the presentation text of each journal), making it difficult to find relevant journals for the visitor. Based on the results, as a technological product, a technical report was prepared: a manual containing verbal-visual guidelines, intended for layout editors of the UFES Journal Portal index page, with the purpose of making visual improvements and facilitating the search for information, in order to verbally and visually standardize the presentation of the periodicals housed there.
