Summary: Academic culture presents several challenges that shape individuals’ perceptions of
their work environment and their own sense of dignity. Among these challenges, the
lack of recognition and respect stands out, both of which are fundamental to the
promotion of dignity at work. In order to investigate how federal education employees
at a university in southeastern Brazil experience dignity at work, a quantitative
approach was adopted. Inferential analyses were conducted with a sample of 223
participants, including administrative staff, faculty members, and other workers. Data
collection was carried out through a questionnaire composed of the Dignity at Work,
Workplace Civility, Workplace Incivility, Subjective Social Status, and Social Support
at Work scales, in addition to a sociodemographic questionnaire used to characterize
the sample. The results indicated positive perceptions of dignity at work, as well as
predictive associations with the analyzed variables. Among them, civility emerged as
the most expressive predictor in the model, indicating that experiences of dignity in this
context depend strongly on the quality of interpersonal relationships. As a technical
product, an educational and instructional booklet was developed to raise awareness
among the academic community and society at large about the importance of fostering
dignified workplace relationships, encouraging reflection and awareness through
accessible language.
